I
am very honored to be President of Lamar Arts for the year 2003 and again
for the coming year of 2004. The arts have always been an important part of
my life. As a child I sketched horses for hours and dreamed of riding away on
one. As a teenager I found my niche (and my husband) by being involved in
high
school chorus. I am not an artist by profession, but the arts have enriched
my life in so many ways. As I have raised my children, I have seen how the arts
can expand your mind and your world. My children have learned diligence
and teamwork, challenged their own creativity and talents, and experienced
the thrill of praise and applause, all through artistic endeavors.
Lamar Arts' By-Laws state
two Purposes for this organization to exist. "(a)
To promote the
visual and performing arts...and to make the arts available
to the general
public on a nondiscriminatory basis; (b) To encourage art
activities in the schools."
This is what Lamar Arts has done in
the past, and will continue to do in this next year. We have a
larger
Board of Directors this year and many members that are eager to help us
fulfill our purposes. We have
many programs planned this year, a repeat performance of "Harriet Tubman" by Mrs.Vivian Johnson,
our very successful visual arts show, and the military band
concert to name a few.
We will also continue
to co-sponsor visiting artists at Gordon College, assist
with the Kids College, and lend our support to the
artistic programs in the public schools, and to
promote and advertise
all artistic events in the Bagpiper.
It is my goal to continue the good
work that Lamar Arts has been doing and to seek ways that we
can more effectively fulfill our purposes. I welcome any comments and
suggestions that anyone
would like to share with us. We are a service organization to the community of
Lamar County.
I also want to encourage everyone to become involved in what we are doing,
help us to support
the Arts in Lamar County.
Sincerely
Theresa Brown
